Today is my birthday. It’s a fine day, much like any other except perhaps for the pumpkins with faces and people in costume. I’m forty-nine…yikes! So naturally I’ve caught myself lately thinking more about, well, time. And the more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve resolved that age happens and that time is a good thing. What else could it be? Seriously, what could I do should I conclude it to be “bad”?
So time is good; and thus the purpose of this blog and My Quest. So off we go, but first a little background.
We are five and two. Or perhaps more accurately, we are “four and two and one”. My wife Denise of 28 years and our three daughters, J, M and K comprise the four treasures of my life. They make everything better and I’m thus blessed and smitten four times over. Lexi and Dover (also both female) are two wonderfully loyal American Eskimo dogs. And as you may have guessed, I’m the “one”.

We’ve lived in Omaha, Nebraska, slightly north of the geographic center of the United States, since Denise completed her Business/Accounting degree and I completed my Graduate studies in Architecture in 1984. Not so coincidentally, this was the same year J was born. M and K followed in three year increments. Quite content, I quickly resigned myself to await some future wedding to deliver my male kindred.
We designed and built our current home in 1992 and it has served us well as we’ve seen our girls grow from our darling little sweethearts to charming young women. It’s a fine home and we are very happy.Our eldest daughter J has now graduated from Iowa State University with degrees in Marketing and Management. She lives near Seattle in Redmond, Washington and is currently working for Microsoft Corporation. Our second daughter M is in her third of five years in the School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame. This third year has taken her away for two consecutive semesters of study abroad in Rome. We all anxiously await her homecoming in May. Our baby K is a high school senior and will graduate in May. She is considering attending Iowa State University to study Graphic Design. These girls have grown to be our best friends and we couldn’t be more proud of them.
With the passage of time, we are eager to continue our participation in the growth of our daughters and their future families. And we are equally as eager for them to continue to share in our growth as our family's lives expand beyond the shelter of one roof. And filling and sharing this passage of together time and apart time is the sole purpose of this blog, My Quest – Time to Decorate at Home and Away.
